the kordatzkys go camping…?

i wanted to go camping this summer.
i didn’t know when or how (chris works retail and had already asked for some weekends off for our family vacation and family reunion, so we didn’t really want to over extend his employer’s graciousness), but i wanted to go camping.
the last time maya had been camping was when she was 4 months old.
brin and dane had never gone camping.
i told chris that we needed to camp.
so when we had a day when we were both off, we needed to pitch a tent and sleep in it.
the next day, we found out that chris had the tuesday after labor day off as did i.
so we pitched a tent in our backyard.
right next to the house.
the girls loved loved LOVED it.

however, this “camping trip” was not at all what i had ever experienced before. to me, it was a bit strange and almost disappointing, but to the girls, it was GREAT!
let me explain.
first of all, the night of labor day, chris got home, hung out with us, and helped me to make supper. we grilled hot dogs and brats.
then we ate them at the dining room table because the mosquitoes were pretty horrible (and we didn’t want to go through all the work of cleaning it all up again!)
after dinner, chris wanted to mow the lawn before we pitched the tent.
so i started a movie in the basement so i could give brin her neb.
chris finished mowing and maya came outside with me to watch us pitch the tent.
brin chose to stay in the basement and watch the movie.
movie night at the campsite.
then, for bed, we put dane to bed in his crib in his room.
the windows were open so we could hear him, but technically, dane has still not gone “camping” or camping.
we set up a bonfire and made s’mores. the girls were so excited, but really didn’t want to eat the s’mores. i made 4 of them for myself.
then, we realized that we were nagging the girls to stop this and stop that, so went into the house, brushed the teeth, and tucked them into bed in the tent.
that was the good night experience of the camping trip.
the slept great, and i don’t think it took them too long to actually fall asleep.

the next morning, we decided to go on a “hike.”
to the grocery store.
however, we had to get some many groceries that chris walked with the girls, and i drove the car with dane.
we shopped.
we filled the entire trunk of the car.
chris put both girls in the car and drove home, while i “hiked” back to the “campsite” with dane.

on the way home, dane and i had a picnic. isn’t that nice?
well, if it was a real picnic, maybe that would be something to write home about.
it was tuesday and so therefore it was taco tuesday at taco john’s again and being that it was just me and dane and i had some cash, i stopped and got myself lunch (to share with dane, of course).
we sat under a tree at the church right off the road.
what a picnic to remember. LET ME TELL YOU!

oh, yeah, before we went on our hike, our morning activity consisted of a dance INthe house. enjoy the video. brin, of course, was dancing much more lively before i took out the camera. and maya was busying herself playing in their room.

we are SO going to have to try this again….FOR real someday. like maybe next summer. at least the girls had a BLAST! i guess that’s good.

I LOVE your camping trip! It sounds just perfect for your family. And, someday, you will actually be able to leave your backyard!

And you've eased them into camping–so they like it!

Did you ever hear the Adventures in Odyssey where the Barclays have to stay home for their summer vacation? It was kind of like this story…

Picture comments: the one of you and Dane is CUTE. I also love Brin's expression in the first one inside the tent.
